Six principles behind Hydrohex classes.

We designed the classes for mechanisms the aquatic-exercise literature points to. Our members tell us the design works. This page is honest about which of those two things we're actually claiming.

What this page is (and isn't)

What we do claim

Hydrohex classes were engineered around principles from the peer-reviewed aquatic-exercise literature โ€” Cochrane reviews, meta-analyses, Nature-published RCTs. Each of the six categories has a documented mechanism it was designed for.

What we don't claim

There are no Hydrohex-specific RCTs. We can't tell you โ€œHydrohex has been proven to reduce X by Y%.โ€ What we can show you is real members whose habits changed โ€” and the design provenance for why that's happening.

Why MOVE + POWER exist

Water halves the impact.

In vivo joint-force measurements show hip and knee loading reduced by 36โ€“55% during aquatic exercise versus the same movements on land. That's why our foundation classes are low-impact strength and mobility โ€” not gentle-only stretching. Members who can't tolerate land-based training can still work hard.

Why POWER + CARDIO exist

Intensity works in older adults.

Progressive resistance and interval work in the 65+ population reliably improves strength, gait speed, and functional independence. The research doesn't say seniors need gentle exercise; it says most seniors aren't offered anything else. We designed for the members who want to be pushed.

Why BEAT exists

Fun is retention.

Music-led and choreographed exercise sustains higher heart rates than matched non-music sessions, engages neurocognitive systems dance-based training uniquely reaches, and improves 6-month adherence. BEAT isn't a gimmick โ€” it's a retention mechanism disguised as a party.

Why FLOW exists โ€” shipping autumn 2026

Mobility earns the intensity.

Restorative aquatic mobility work reduces post-exertion stiffness and enables higher-intensity days later in the week. A week without a restorative day plateaus faster. FLOW rounds out the Mobility and Rhythm programmes โ€” safe every trimester and the gentlest thing we make.

Why the class format matters

The pool community is part of the workout.

Group exercise improves adherence, mood, and enjoyment versus matched solo training โ€” even when the two are physiologically identical. Members tell the same story back: friendships that form around a shared Tuesday morning, someone to text on a rainy Wednesday, a nod across the pool at week 30. The class delivery at the pool is engineered around that social layer โ€” and members consistently name it as the thing that turned a workout into a habit.

Why we focus on pools

Water suits the audiences most gyms miss.

Aquatic environments allow the training intensities that arthritic, overweight, post-surgical, and prenatal populations cannot reach on land โ€” buoyancy reduces impact, the water itself provides self-limiting resistance, and the visual barrier below the waterline lowers self-consciousness. Pools serve the members traditional gyms consistently lose.

How the pool actually works

The three safeties of the pool.

Water is a fundamentally different training environment because it reduces three different risks at once. Each one lowers a specific barrier โ€” physical, cognitive, social โ€” that keeps members off the gym floor.

IPhysical safety

Water reduces hip and knee joint forces by 36โ€“55% in vivo. Resistance is self-limiting โ€” move slower, encounter less force. Fall risk is near zero. Members with joint pain, post-surgical recovery, or excess weight can train at intensities land-based programmes rule out. [6]

IICognitive safety

A missed choreography step on a gym floor is a stumble or a collision. In water, it's just a splash. Buoyancy and resistance forgive timing errors โ€” which is why members attempt coordination patterns in a Hydrohex class they'd never try in a land-based dance class.

IIIPsychological safety

The water surface acts as a visual barrier โ€” other members can't clearly see movements below the waterline. Effort is private. Mistakes are private. Body image, fitness level, coordination โ€” none of it is on display. The fear of visible failure dissolves, which for many members is what removes the last barrier to trying at all.

These three safeties compound. When physical, cognitive, and social risk drop at the same time, members build exercise confidence faster than they can build it anywhere else โ€” which is what turns a trial into a routine.

Where the category sits

Aquatic exercise is included in the physical-activity guidance of the WHO, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Heart Association, the CDC, and the Arthritis Foundation โ€” the last of which operates its own aquatic programme recognised by the US National Council on Aging as an evidence-based intervention. None of these bodies endorse Hydrohex specifically. They endorse the mechanism our classes were built on.
